The Goolburri Indigenous Youth Service supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people who are involved with, or at risk of involvement with the youth justice system. We work alongside youth, their families, and communities to encourage positive choices, personal growth, and strong cultural connections. Our goal is to help young people heal, develop life skills, and create pathways toward a safe, confident, and empowered future.

What We Do

The Indigenous Youth Service provides holistic, culturally informed support for young people aged 10-17 years who may be experiencing challenges such as offending, high-risk behavior, or disconnection from family, culture or education. We work to support young people involved with or at risk of entering the youth justice system, helping families strengthen relationships and manage challenges that may contribute to offending or risk, provide early intervention and case management for youth and families in need, encourage healing, growth, and a strong sense of cultural identity. Our service places a strong emphasis on healing, connection, and cultural belonging – helping young people understand who they are, where they come from and where they want to go.

How We Support Youth

Our Youth Workers provide one-on-one mentoring, case planning, and practical support that helps young people make better life choices and build confidence in themselves. Support may include but is not limited to:

  • Developing case plans and setting achievable goals
  • Building life and decision-making skills
  • Strengthening cultural identity and community connection
  • Learning how to resolve conflict peacefully and respectfully
  • Supporting re-engagement with school, training, or employment
  • Encouraging responsibility, accountability, and self-worth

We also help young people establish both formal and informal support networks, linking them with local service, Elders, and mentors who can guide and encourage them along their journey.

Our Approach

The Indigenous Youth Service is guided by cultural safety, community partnership, and respect. Our approach is grounded in:

  • Healing and restoration – supporting emotional and spiritual wellbeing
  • Cultural identity – maintaining connection to Country, culture and community
  • Strength based practice – building on what’s working
  • Empowerment – encouraging young people to take control of their choices and future
